The New (Old) Ride

Jon and I possibly made our biggest purchase so far on our own. We gave ourselves a budget but didn’t wanna compromise on the car make, so we looked around for a decent second hand and got ourselves a Suzuki Swift 1.5 litre manual transmission.

Actually, I think the sports rims won Jon over. It seems when it comes to cars, most men have a little ah beng hidden in them. I am dating a closet beng.

Growing older…

doesn’t mean you stop celebrating your birthday. Doesn’t mean you’ve gotta have a quiet, boring evening. My colleagues (I’d rather call them friends actually, but they happen to be my colleagues too) decided I should go partying and insisted they’ll make me drunk.

I worked very hard not to puke, not to get drunk, and aimed to reach a point where I was just happy. I think my wish came true, except I took a little too long (2 days) to recover from one night of partying. And I’m embarrassed to admit this – my knees hurt while dancing. Help me, Glucosamine!

Here are pics of the night. I love my girls. I really do.

Weekday routine

Does the routine keep you sane or make you go crazy/frustrated?

6.45am – Alarm rings. Snooze about 5 times
7.15am – Finally wake up. Make coffee, grab breakfast from the oven
7.30am – Read papers while eating breakfast
7.45am – Toilet
8.00am – Shower
8.15am – Change clothes, make-up, dry hair, check email
8.45am – Leave house
9.30am – Reach office

The hours in the office go in a flurry. Sometimes I leave at 7.30pm but most of the time I leave at 8-9pm. On some occasions, 10-11pm or later. And the cycle continues in the morning.

How long can you stay out without your phone?

Today, I left my phone at home and Jon knew how lost I would feel. So he dropped by the office just to pass me it to me. I am so very grateful.

This should be a tweet but thought I should really make the little things in life stick out more.

Health Check

I went for my first health check ever since I left school. The last time was probably in JC when I had to do a check before leaving for a community service trip in Vietnam. I remember the malaria pills and the scolding we got from our teacher for eating some BBQ-ed banana skin from one of the roadside stores.

As I was saying, I had a health check and had a GP examine my breasts for lumps – I don’t think I’ve ever had a doctor touch my breasts like that before. It’s so hard not to laugh. The doc says you should check your breasts and armpits every month for lumps. And you should do it after your menses; because sometimes before your menses, you might have lumpy breasts? But if anything at all, you’ll feel a pea-sized lump. I probably read this somewhere before but I never really bothered.

I think it’s time to get serious with my health. I’m doing pretty well. I have a slightly lower blood pressure than normal – which is fine – and Doc is happy that I exercise regularly. But I shouldn’t take this for granted and spoil what I’ve been blessed with. I think I’m gonna stop the fags for real – however little I do.

Yikes. I said it.

Jane Austen

I saw a whole collection of Hardcover Penguin Classics at a Borders store in Melbourne, but thought I shouldn’t carry extra weight back so I didn’t get it. Besides, I’ll possibly find it in Borders Singapore. Fail. They don’t.

But yesterday, I saw Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility in that particular Hardcover sitting by itself at the bottom of a shelf in Kinokuniya. And of course I grabbed it straightaway!

The problem with me is that I buy too many books – more than I can read. So I tend to read a few books at a time and sometimes I get confused.

Currently reading:
- Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility
- Tracy Chevalier’s The Virgin Blue
- Paulo Coelho’s The Winner Stands Alone (well, I sorta started)
- Imogen Edwards-Jones’ Fashion Babylon

And a couple of magazines. I need a faster reading pace.

$1 coins

A group of us were discussing a friend’s plan to sell $1 drinks at a pasar malam.

And it’s $1 and not $1.20 so it’s easier for change. But where do you get a bag of $1 coins without going to the bank and paying the fee?

J: Stand outside the bank and offer to trade with people at no fee. Undercut the bank!
A: Or you could look for vending machines, put in two 50 cents and press eject. Sometimes they’ll give you a $1 coin.
C: Or you can take the MRT, buy a single trip EZLink card and get your $1 refund

It was a funny moment but how else would you get $1 coins without paying the bank?

Angst

Too much angst in me these days. Even the slightest thing manages to get on my nerves and I’ve been throwing teenage tantrums at everyone that rubs me the wrong way. I’m frustrated and have been having angry, sleepless nights but I can’t change external forces so I guess I shall learn how to deal with it.

Glad for the day off – I’m going for a long ride and possibly a swim. And I hope it all goes away.

Biggest Eater

At lunch today, my colleagues concluded that I’m the biggest eater in the team. Since I can’t sleep (again), I shall list down my favourite food items:

- Meiji Plain Crackers
- Wheat biscuits
- Honey Graham biscuits
- Tutu Kueh
- Scones with butter and jam
- Cereal with fresh milk
- Mochi bread from Four Leaves Bakery
- Egg sandwich
- Egg Mcmuffins
- Kinder Bueno
- Cadbury Twirl

A lot of carbs but they comfort my tummy best. Pretty easy to please I guess, except I get hungry at weird timings. Like right after dinner.
